Starting keto and feeling a little... backed up? You're not alone. Mild constipation is one of the most common early keto complaints — and the good news is it's usually temporary and easy to sort out. Here's what's really going on and how to get regular again.
Why keto can bung you up
It's rarely the fat or the lack of carbs directly. The usual culprits are:
- Less fiber — cutting rice, bread, and starchy foods often means cutting fiber too, if you don't replace it with low-carb plants.
- Water & salt shifts — early keto flushes out water and sodium (the same reason for the keto flu), which can firm up stools.
- Less variety at first — new keto eaters sometimes lean on meat and cheese and forget the gulay.
The simple fixes
🥬 Eat more low-carb fiber
Pile on the leafy gulay — kangkong, pechay, malunggay — plus avocado, and add chia seeds or ground flaxseed (mostly fiber, barely any net carbs; see our keto baking staples). See the full keto gulay list for ideas.
💧 Drink water — with a little salt
Dehydration is a top cause. Drink enough water through the day, and add a bit of salt or sip sabaw to replace the sodium keto flushes out.
🧊 Get magnesium
Magnesium helps things move. Nuts, fish, and leafy greens help; a magnesium supplement can too if things stay stubborn.
🥐 Add fermented foods
A little plain yogurt or kimchi supports gut bacteria. (Skip sweet atchara — it's sugary.)
🏃 Move and keep a routine
Daily movement, even a walk, and a regular morning coffee and bathroom routine all help.
What not to do
- Don't live on cheese and "keto treats" — low-fiber and easy to overdo.
- Don't under-eat — too little food means too little to move through.
- Don't ignore thirst — water is half the fix.
When to see a doctor
Reach out to a doctor if constipation is severe, lasts more than a week or two despite these fixes, or comes with significant pain, bloating, or blood. New to keto overall? Our beginner's guide covers the first-week bumps.
Quick answers
What's the fastest fix?
More water with a pinch of salt, plus a spoon of ground flaxseed or chia and extra leafy gulay — usually within a couple of days.
Can I be low-carb and high-fiber?
Yes. Leafy gulay, avocado, chia, and flaxseed are high in fiber and low in net carbs.
Do I need laxatives?
Usually not. Fiber, fluids, electrolytes, and movement fix most cases. Ask a doctor if it persists.
