The Filipino Keto Pantry: Which Condiments Are Safe (and Which Hide Sugar)

Toyo, patis, suka — the holy trinity of Filipino flavor. Most of it is keto-friendly, but a few bottles on your shelf are secret sugar bombs. Here's how to tell them apart.

By Meals by Lily · Keto & Filipino food

Here's a relief for every Pinoy on keto: your everyday sawsawan is mostly on your side. Plain toyo, patis, and suka are low-carb and keto-friendly. The danger isn't the classic condiments — it's the sweetened versions and the bottled sauces that quietly pack in sugar. Let's walk through your pantry, bottle by bottle.

The short version Plain toyo, patis, and natural suka are keto-safe. The sugar hides in sweet soy, banana ketchup, oyster sauce, sweet chili, and bottled marinades. When in doubt, read the label.

🏾 Toyo (soy sauce) — mostly safe

Traditional toyo is fermented soybeans, wheat, and salt, with only about 1g of carbs per tablespoon — perfectly fine on keto in normal amounts. The problems start when sugar is added:

🐟 Patis (fish sauce) — the safest of all

Pure patis is just fermented fish and salt — essentially zero carbs. It's one of the most keto-friendly condiments in any kitchen, and it adds huge umami without a single gram of sugar.

🥤 Suka (vinegar) — safe, and full of flavor

Vinegar is a keto secret weapon — bright, acidic, and virtually carb-free. All the natural Filipino vinegars qualify:

How to read a Filipino condiment label

Build a keto sawsawan that actually delivers

You don't need sugar to make a killer dipping sauce. Our go-to keto sawsawan: coconut aminos (or plain toyo) + suka + calamansi + sili + chopped onion — no sugar, all flavor. Add patis for extra umami, or make sinamak for that spicy-sour hit. This is exactly how we season at Meals by Lily. Want more? Quick answers

Is toyomansi keto?

Homemade toyo + calamansi is fine. Bottled toyomansi often adds sugar — check the label, or just mix your own.

Is oyster sauce allowed?

In small amounts occasionally; it has sugar and starch (a few grams of carbs per spoon), so use sparingly or skip it.

What's the safest all-around condiment?

Patis and natural suka — both near-zero carbs. Calamansi and chili are freebies too.

We season the keto way — no hidden sugar

Every Meals by Lily dish is cooked with clean, low-carb condiments — coconut aminos, patis, natural suka — never sweet sauces or fillers. Real Filipino flavor, delivered keto across Metro Manila.
