The Best Keto-Friendly Filipino Foods

Going keto in the Philippines? Good news — a surprising amount of Pinoy food is already low-carb. Here's what to eat, what to skip, and how to keep your favorites.

The biggest myth about keto in the Philippines is that you have to give up Filipino food. You don't. The real challenge is just one thing: rice. Take rice out of the picture (or swap it for cauliflower rice), and you'll find that so many of our classic dishes — adobo, sinigang, inihaw, bicol express — are naturally keto-friendly.

This guide breaks down the Filipino foods that fit a low-carb, ketogenic lifestyle, the ones to watch out for, and the simple swaps that let you eat like a Pinoy without the carbs. New to keto entirely? Start with our Keto for Beginners guide first.

Filipino dishes that are naturally keto-friendly

These are built around meat, seafood, eggs, and vegetables — exactly what keto is made of. Just skip the rice and watch out for sugary sauces.

🍗 Grilled & roasted (inihaw / litson)

🍲 Stews & classics (ulam)

🍮 Soups (sabaw)

🥚 Veggies, eggs & snacks

It's about portions, not bans. Slightly higher-carb vegetables like sayote (chayote, ~4.5g carbs per 100g) and kalabasa (squash, ~8.6g per 100g) still fit keto in small servings — around 50g adds only a couple of grams of carbs. That's exactly how we use them in our dishes: for flavor and variety, kept well within your daily carb budget.

Filipino foods to limit or avoid on keto

These are high in carbs or hidden sugar. You don't have to fear them forever, but they'll knock you out of ketosis fast.

Watch out for hidden sugar. The sneakiest carbs in Filipino cooking aren't obvious — they're in instant sinigang mixes, marinades, banana ketchup, and "sweet-style" longganisa or tapa. When in doubt, ask how it's seasoned, or cook with fresh souring agents and sugar-free sauces.

Smart keto swaps for Filipino favorites

You rarely have to give a dish up completely — you just swap the carb-heavy part.
