Starting keto sounds complicated — macros, ketosis, “keto flu.” It really isn’t. At its core, keto is one simple move: cut the carbs, and eat real food instead. Here’s a clear, no-overwhelm way to start this week.
Step 1: Set your carb limit
Keto works by keeping carbs low enough that your body switches to burning fat. Aim for under about 20–30g of net carbs a day (net carbs = total carbs minus fiber). That mainly means no rice, bread, sugar, or sweet drinks.
Step 2: Know what to eat
Build meals from three things: protein, low-carb vegetables, and healthy fats. Fish, chicken, eggs, meat; leafy greens and other low-carb gulay; olive oil, avocado, and the natural fat in real food. Our full keto food list and healthy keto plate show exactly how.
Step 3: Clear out the carbs
Make it easy on yourself — remove the temptations: rice, bread, pasta, chips, sweets, and sugary drinks. If it’s not in the house, you won’t reach for it at 9pm.
Step 4: Plan your first few days
Don’t wing it. Decide what your first breakfasts, lunches, and dinners will be — see what to eat in a day on keto and shop with our keto grocery list. A little planning is the difference between sticking with it and quitting on day 2.
Step 5: Water and electrolytes
The main reason beginners feel tired the first week is the keto flu — and it’s almost always just electrolytes. Drink plenty of water and get enough sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Do this and most people skip the slump entirely.
Step 6: Give it 3–4 weeks
The first-week scale drop is mostly water; real fat loss builds over the following weeks. Judge progress over a month, not a day — here’s what your first week looks like.
Optional: dial in your macros
